For the last 4 days I’ve been trying to upload my video of Boogie Blind from the UBB Tour Launch to no avail. I was finally able to upload a video, but unfortunately it’s only the last leg of his amazing set. He, along with a slew of legendary DJs, rocked BB Kings in NYC on 2/24, to celebrate Ultimate Breaks & Beats hitting the road! Check out the clip below, Boogie killed it and had everyone screaming…he shut it down! I’m not quite sure why DJ Scratch found it necessary to jump into Boogie’s set, maybe he was just hyped or something, hmmm…

As far as the tour, I’m not talking about some sort of CD playing DJs, I’m talking about real DJs. They scratch, mix, do tricks, and know how to rock any party. The lineup is ridiculous, Dj Dummy, Boogie Blind (The X-Ecutionerz), Dj Evil Dee (Da Beatminerz), Dj Scratch, Lord Finesse, Breakbeat Lou (Co-Founder Of Ultimate Breaks & Beats), Dj Incrediboi, Mr. Walt (Da Beatminerz), and many more! Big ups to Eddie B Swift for putting this whole thing together. I don’t know which DJs are playing where, but they’re hitting up 25+ cities. I have to double-check the dates, but this is what was on DJ Wayneski’s site. Go see them if you can, you will surely get a music history lesson.

I took a few flicks while I was there, check them out also.

style diary, week 9

Posted in February 2010, Style Diary, fashion, photography with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 4, 2010 by Jay Nima

Lucky number 9!  Ok, actually i don’t find 9 lucky, but I’m a wee bit delirious at the moment, since I’m working on an 1 1/2 hours of sleep, but it’s all good.  Last week i mentioned the sad news that my SLR camera broke and is in the shop.  As a result, this week I played with my point and shoot camera, to see if I could come up with some acceptable imagery.  I think that it worked out pretty well. What do you think? No double-outfit day posts like last week’s Friday, but i did get inspired by horizontal images.

This week my favorite picture was Thursday.  In the Style Diary it seems like I rarely smile, but I actually do, so I thought the picture caught a great moment.  Thursday may also be my favorite outfit, I love the teal corduroys and the printed top. But I have to go with Saturday, my denim jacket has been my go-to item, and I’m definitely feeling the maroon tights; I need to add colored tights to my wardrobe stat!

Ok, I had to keep it short and sweet, this week is CRAZY…and that’s an understatement. I’m going to bed!

I shot extraordinary party DJ, Music Director, Producer, and DJ for Common, DJ Dummy…ok, ok, ok and my artist, a few weeks ago. Here are a few of the images.  I can’t wait until it gets warmer, so we can go on location and hopefully get more creative shots!

Loving the Forever Roc Raida t-shirt picture, RIP Raida you are thoroughly missed.

Also check him out live every morning 7-9 AM, at the Breakfast Club. He starts your day off right…no more angry mornings!

just put it in the bag…

I love creative beings, so I had to highlight the limited-edition, hand-crafted luggage by London College of Fashion graduate student, Sara Williams (via Trendland).  The pieces are AMAZING!  …I know I wouldn’t be checking them on the plane though.

The beautiful work costs a pretty penny, and rightfully so. Not only are the pieces the most innovative designs I’ve ever seen, they are made by traditional bridle leather of the finest quality, the brass bands are created by metal crafters, and the saddle stitching is all done by hand.

The designs were made to challenge tradition.  Score!

these are a few of my favorite things…

You may have figured out by now that Music and Photography are my passions.  One of my favorite sites/photographers that infuse my passions is photobytone.com.  Tone’s work is the closest I’ve seen to what direction I’d ideally like to go with my craft.  He’s able to bring photography, music, and the random minutia that inspires him, together in an intriguing way.  Much of his work also involves visually appealing intimate video interviews with musicians.

His recent posting, 431, is with The Kid Daytona.  I’ve known Daytona for a couple years, but hadn’t seen him for a hot minute. Ironically enough, I saw him last week at Santos and asked him what was going on in his flourishing career. I’ve been slipping on my Hip-Hop game, because apparently he’s the next big thing.  Other than knowing that he’s a genuinely nice guy, with an amazing memory, the last thing I really knew about his music was his Justin Timberlake, Sexy Back remix and his fun single Fly Shit.

I got a chance to check out his new stuff, and I must say all the buzz is warranted!  I’m hyper-critical of Hip-Hop these days, and he’s nice (and I’m not saying this because I know him).  He has a vibe that just might be necessary for the music game right now, and the canter of his flow is refreshing.   There’s a small excerpt from his song Lately in that Tone video.

Look out for The Kid Daytona!

i shot a baby…but i didn’t get arrested

Posted in March 2010, photography with tags , , on March 1, 2010 by Jay Nima

If you recall my tweets, you may remember that I said I shot a baby.  I love saying it because it sounds so wrong.  Obviously since I’m a photographer, I don’t mean with a gun.  Anyway, so a few weeks a go, I had the pleasure of photographing a friend’s newborn.  Some may know, I’m not exactly the most maternal of sorts, plus it was my 1st time shooting a baby.  I was excited and nervous, but it came out pretty good.  Here are a few of my favorites:

style diary, week 8

Posted in February 2010, Style Diary, fashion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 26, 2010 by Jay Nima

Waawhoooo! Week 8, 2 months down! Like every week until May, I have a lot to jam into my days with very little sleep, so comfort seems to be the key to everything for me. Even when I’m going ‘out out,’ I’ve taken the getting dressed up thing down a few notches. Heels seem like such a pain in the butt right now…but i’m sure I’ll get over it when the weather warms my toes.

You’ll notice that my Harllem lace-up boots by Steve Madden, that debuted in Week 7, are in full effect this week. They are so comfortable and perfect with this icky weather. Whether I’m wearing them with legging, relaxed jeans, or a skirt, i tend to feel bad ass in them, sort of like a sexy girl rockin’ Tims in a weird way.

Since I’ve started Style Diary, I haven’t posted my clothing changes. We all have days we wear more than one outfit, so I decided to post mine on Friday. I’m not sure if I like how it looks aesthetically on the site, but when i make a decision you may be seeing more.

Anywho, my favorite picture this week was Sunday, maybe it was the white shirt that made my eyes look striking, but I just thought the picture was the strongest. My favorite outfit of the week was Friday night. You can’t go wrong with a leather skirt and I’ve been a little bit obsessed with denim jackets as of late. I thought it was a cute outfit for a run-in with my crush, even if i didn’t end up speaking to him. lol

Be pleased with how you look each time you walk out the house! Enjoy the rest of your week!

Posted in Album of the Week, February 2010, music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 24, 2010 by Jay Nima

I haven’t written a blurb about the Album of the Week in two weeks.  This is because for the last two weeks Sade’s Solider of Love has been posted as the pick.  I wanted to gush and have amazing things to say about Solider of Love, and while it definitely wasn’t a bad album, I found that most things that I had to say about it were negative.  Since I’m a Sade fanatic (I guess not to the point of never finding fault), I decided not to write anything bad about the album. I will say though, Moon and the Sky, Morning Bird, and the album titled track Solider of Love are beautiful songs.

Sade’s newest effort left me a bit somber; to snap out of it I spent some time listening to Beach House’s new album, Team Dream.  The album didn’t quite get me out of my somber state, but the duo created a very mellow but rhythmic, dreamy vibe, that I really loved.  When you get a chance, check out the Baltimore natives, they are listed as last week’s Album of the Week here.

I was listening to my favorite radio station here in NYC, RXP 101.9, and they played Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day. It’s one of my favorite acoustic songs, and it just made me nostalgic for 90’s Alterative bands; great times.  That’s why for this week I decided to go West, and pick one of my all-time favorite bands, Red Hot Chili Peppers, their album Californication, is one of my favorites.  The album holds 5 songs by the L.A. based band that I love, most notably Scar Tissue, as well as Otherside, Californication, Porcelain, and Road Trippin’. If the album had Soul to Squeeze, and even commercially popular Under the Bridge and Give it Away Now, I’d probably lose my mind, but then again it would lose some of the Rock-Rap vibe that is synonymous with RHCP. Take a listen.

Below is the video for Scar Tissue, it’s quite possibly my favorite music video. It completely encapsulates the vibe of the song, and I just want to go out and wander with the sun basking on my face!

i can’t stand it when…via trya.com

My relationship article, “I Can’t Stand It When…” for Tyra.com:

It has been said that there is ‘a thin line between love and hate’. While you may love your partner, chances are there are a few things that do that you can’t stand. I talked to couples to get their gripes on some of the small things that can be a major pain! Here are the top ten complaints:

1. Refusing to put the new roll of toilet paper on the holder…”It take 30 seconds!”

2. Eating the food from your teeth picked out by a toothpick… ”Ewww!”

3. Being extremely competitive while playing games (to the point of cheating!)…”It’s not that serious!”

4. Talking through America’s Next Top Model…”Come on it’s my favorite show!”

5. Thinking you are always right…”No, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is not the longest word in the English language!”

6. Doing private things in front of company or out in public; burping, farting, scratching privates…”No one wants to see that!”

7. Texting or making phone calls while taking a number #2…”why are you thinking of me or anyone else during that time?”

8. Giving styling advice…”I can dress myself, I’ve been doing it since I was 5!”

9. Taking too long to get dressed…”We’re just going to the movies, not a premiere!”

10. Having massive amounts of beauty products and buying more to add to the collection…”How many does one person need, and you don’t even use them!”

They might say they can’t stand it, but yet they still go back for more… isn’t love is a funny little thing?

make love to the camera from Tyra.com

Posted in February 2010, fashion, photography with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 23, 2010 by Jay Nima

Here’s the unedited version of my Make Love to the Camera article on Tyra.com:

Modeling isn’t just about being fierce and SMIZE-ing your way through a photo shoot.  Taking a good picture is a two-way street between the model and the photographer, as the model is essentially creating the photographer’s vision.  Tyra is certainly an expert in modeling but I wanted to get a different point of view… the photographer’s!  I got student photographer’s, along with Leif Huron Lafferty-Gebauer’s – an emerging photographer – perspective on what is needed to get a great shot.  Surprisingly, knowing how to pose isn’t one of them! Read on to find out how you can make love to the camera…

  • Be Natural: The age of the manufactured ‘model’ poses are out.
  • Take a Chill Pill: Not only is it extremely important for models to be comfortable with themselves, the photographer needs to be comfortable with the model.
  • Use Your Psychic Skills: Photographers aren’t always the most clear at articulating their vision. A model needs to be able to listen, interpret & transform instruction.
  • Patience is a Virtue: A huge part of any photo shoot is waiting!  Waiting for the sun to be just right, a cloud to move, or to adjust a light. Remember- patience is a virtue!
  • Move That Body: A model should be aware of his or her body and be fluid with their movements.  One photographer said a background in dance can be useful.
  • Speak Up: Many photographers like to find a common ground with their models, asking everyday questions, finding a way to relate and get to know them.  Have things to say and let your personality shine.
  • Follow the Leader: Every photographer said that it’s important to be able to follow directions, remember they’re seeing the image. Models can take creative freedom, but need to be receptive to directions and tweaks.

To get an idea of natural and fluid movement, check out one of the photographers I spoke with, Leif Huron Lafferty-Gebauer (he did the photos featured), at http://www.leifhuron.com, look under Screen Test, great stuff!

Now you’re ready to go out and be fierce!
